Domain Refinement

Cogent uses laser domain refinement to achieve the best magnetic grades for Unsil H products. Laser domain refinement uses high power lasers located on our thermal flattening lines to scribe lines on the surface of the strip. These lines are not normally visible on the product, but may be seen clearly using a domain viewer as demonstrated below.

Laser domain refinement changes the format of the domain structure within the material. It creates a larger number of smaller domains, which reduces the power loss during the magnetisation process.

A major advantage of the laser scribing process is that it does not damage the integrity of the insulation coating. However, laser scribed material cannot be annealed if the user wishes to maintain the power loss improvements achieved by this process.
